When planning a vacation, it's crucial to understand how your health insurance and travel insurance work together to cover unexpected expenses. While both insurances may cover certain medical costs abroad, there are clear differences in coverage and conditions.

Health Insurance: What's Covered?

The Dutch basic health insurance provides worldwide coverage for emergency medical assistance. This means that if you require urgent medical care during your trip, the basic insurance reimburses costs up to the rate applicable in the Netherlands for the same treatment. In countries where healthcare costs are higher than in the Netherlands, such as the United States, Switzerland, or Canada, you may need to pay the difference yourself. A supplementary health insurance can offer additional coverage, but it's essential to review the policy terms to understand the extent of this coverage.

Travel Insurance: Additional Coverage

Travel insurance is designed to cover not only medical expenses but also other travel-related risks, such as loss of luggage, cancellations, and repatriation. Regarding medical expenses, travel insurance often covers:

  • Additional medical costs: Expenses exceeding the Dutch rate are often covered by travel insurance.
  • Repatriation: Returning to the Netherlands in case of severe illness or accident.
  • Necessary dental care: Limited coverage for dental treatments urgently needed during the trip.

It's important to note that not all activities are covered by default. For high-risk sports like skiing, diving, or mountaineering, additional coverage is often required.

What's Not Covered?

Both health and travel insurances have exclusions. Treatments not deemed medically necessary, cosmetic procedures, or pre-planned care are generally not covered. Additionally, damage or injury resulting from reckless behavior, drug or alcohol use, or participation in hazardous activities without appropriate coverage is usually not reimbursed.

Conclusion

While your basic health insurance offers a certain level of coverage during your vacation, travel insurance can provide essential additional protection, especially in countries with higher healthcare costs or if you plan to engage in high-risk activities. It's advisable to review your insurance policies before departure and consider obtaining additional coverages to avoid unpleasant surprises.
